Airbrush work never ceases to amaze me. It's one thing to be able to do photo realism in photoshop (where you can re-do, edit, paste, and manipulate to your hearts content) but another thing entirely to be able to get the same effect on real paper. Brilliant.

Very beautiful, it is photorealistic. All the metal areas are perfect!
In my point of view the leather is has a little bit of plastic look, but that's my opinion. I can not give you anyting less than +7 (thats the highest i'm allowed).

this is very well done, but i wonder..... why do this if you can take a photo?
technically a five of five, but artistically i find this very poor.

Thanks for all of the kind comments, they’re very much appreciated & in answer to a couple of the comments above:-

In answer to Pwyll's comment:

I have already mentioned at the top "The watch was created as an exercise in producing different textures and surfaces from photographic reference with an airbrush and gouache". It was never intended as a great artistic masterpiece it was an illustration produced to improve my technical/airbrush abilities. Reproducing photographic reference with an airbrush and paint is a great way to become familiar with textures and reflections.

In answer to Zin’s comment:

There isn’t a full res version of the artwork as it exists as paint on board in my portfolio, the full size artwork is on A3 art board.

Cheers,

Rob.

i love the anisotropic material of the metal (i'mma sucker for that stuff)! man, it's just so... so... so anisotropic, hehe. love it.

very well executed, though not too much for the composition side of things, that aside, as a texture study, you did pretty well. i'd definately like to see some of your learnings used on a composition :) i think you could accoplish a nice piece.

Wow, this is an amazing piece! The detail is fantastic!
One thing I would say is that the golden marks for the 12, 15, 30, 45 are not in alignment. This makes the edges look a little off. If you were to look straight down on the watch the 12 and 30 would be a little more over to the right than they should be and the 15 and 45 would be a little lower than they should be.
But other than that, this is a great piece! You should be proud! :)

You have got to be kidding me.

I am blown away. The photorealism of this piece, the textures, the lighting, THE DIALS AND DETAILS OF THE WATCH FACE. Wow. This is purely incredible. Veru worthy of recognition. You should pat yourself on the back. This is a masterpiece. Look at how many people are already blown away.

You started a following with this one.

You know people, before photoshop and computers used in design there was a group of artists that had immense talent who gave birth to the genre of Photorealism. They used only their HANDS to paint on actual paper and canvas. Their work was used in technical manuals and as images in different types of books. Please do yourselves a favor and look at the old paintings done in Museums and in books that document the history of art. Don't insult this man's talent because your ideas of what can be done by hand are restricted to using the mouse or tablet. I am not discrediting artists who use the computer as such a tool, but please don't say it is impossible to use an airbrush and paint and pencils to produce this kind of art. Computers haven't been around that long, the other tools of the trade have. Do some research and open your minds!
